Imagining Europe audiences were treated to a powerful world premiere of a brand new work by Belarus Free Theatre -- specially commissioned by ECF.
The largely exiled theatre company -- from a country that's often referred to as Europe's last dictatorship -- performed in Amsterdam for the first time as part of ECF's four-day Imagining Europe event. They served up a unique emotional "culinary experiment" with a disturbing undertone of violence.
Belarus is the only country in Europe that still enforces the death penalty. The gripping performance portrayed the unimaginable reality of human genocide and people unjustly sentenced to death.
Under the autocratic dictatorship of President Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus Free Theatre's actors have been subjected to continual harassment and even death threats -- forcing them to live in exile. Journalist Caroline van den Heuvel interviewed the actors and a victim of the regime Liubou Kavaliova about their plight and they answered audience questions during a packed Q&A directly after the performance.
